Technical Writing is the 60th best job in 2013

Following the yearly tradition, Careercast released  a list of top 200 different jobs in the U.S based on five criteria: physical demands, work environment, income, stress and hiring outlook. The data for this report came from the Bureau of Labor Statistics and other government agencies in U.S.

Technical Writer was the 60th best job in 2013 though it slipped 23 ranks as it was the 37th best job in the same survey in 2012, and it slipped 34 ranks as it was the 26th best job in the same survey in 2011. Average salary of a technical writer in 2013 is $65,178, up 3% from last year.

Technical Writing received a score of 46.000 in the work environment category.The Work Environment score for the technical writing job is calculated  by measuring two basic factors common to every work environment: the physical and the emotional components.

Hiring Outlook for Technical Writing Jobs in 2013

The ranking system used to evaluate Hiring Outlook by Careercast awards higher scores to jobs with promising futures. Lower scores indicate a poorer outlook. The three factors considered in this criteria were: Employment Growth, Income Growth Potential, and Unemployment. Technical Writing received a score of 9.8 in the hiring outlook.

Stress for Technical Writing Jobs in 2013

The amount of stress a worker experiences can be predicted, in part, by looking at the typical demands and crises inherent in his or her job.technical Writing received a score of 18.00 in 2013 survey.  Comcast ranking system for stress considers 11 different job demands which can reasonably be expected to evoke stress.

    Some interesting statistics about the technical writing profession over the last few years. I’m surprised it has slipped so much in the rankings, although there is a lot of competition for jobs requiring technical skills.
